Colchester are interested in an unnamed non-league striker but their valuation has put The U’s off.

John Ward, as he told The Gazette, is looking for a ‘bargain’ around the non-league scene but the prices being asked even at this level are beyond the club: ‘the non-league is an option.

‘We keep hearing about the lad Jamie Vardy at Fleetwood but they apparently value him at £1m.

‘And Scunthorpe took Connor Jennings from Stalybridge Celtic, for an undisclosed fee.

‘I have enquired about a non-league striker but we were quoted a price of £100,000.’

A new striker, and other signings perhaps, is still something that Colchester need but Ward concedes that a loan deal is the most likely option: ‘I think at this stage, it is more likely to be a loan signing that we make.’
