Anthony Wordsworth’s goal on the stroke of half-time proved the difference between the two sides, in an evenly contested affair.

In a game in which the home side looked bright and sprightly it seemed that Colchester would be given their first real test of the preseason.

Indeed the U`s had comfortably beaten 5 different sides already, however former No2 to George Williams, Mick Harford had Luton Town playing some neat football.

Luton had early efforts from former U`s player Dean Morgan whilst Mark Cousins had to be alert to a 25 yard shot from Matthew Spring.

At the other end Matt Lockwood’s shot across goal, before Cousins was called into action again to thwart the busy paring of Morgan and Spring.

On the stroke of half time the U`s managed to find that killer pass which Yeates supplied to Wordsworth to stroke past the oncoming Luton stopper Brill.

Luton started the second period brightly just as they had the first but for all of their intent the Luton front line could not find their way past a resilient U`s defence.

Colchester soon turned defence into attack when Vernon stung Brills fingertips after great interplay between Wordsworth and Jackson.

Even former U`s midfielder Watson could not unlock what was a well drilled U`s back Line.

With Wasiu ,Vernon, Jackson and Yeates’ all going close as Colchester finished the game much the stronger.

Wordsworth’s once again managed to make his manager take note of his endeavour with the only goal of the game.

COLCHESTER UNITED: Cousins, White, Reid, Coyne, Lockwood, Wordsworth, Jackson, Izzet, Yeates, Wasiu, Vernon. Substitutes: Elito, J Hammond, D Hammond, Quintyn, Platt, Dickey.
