Abbott Might Sign Vernon Regardless

Greg Abbott has admitted he`d be interested in signing 25-year-old Scott Vernon from Colchester United for Carlisle.

It remains to be seen as to whether he would arrive as a part of the deal which should see Ben Williams join Colchester in exchange.

“I thought he did terrifically well for Colchester when they won 2-0 up here (last season),” Abbott told the BBC yesterday lunchtime.

“He’s a big size, he’s got presence and he will upset people. He is the type of player we’ve been looking for,” added the manager, who also set a deadline of 5pm tomorrow for the U`s to decide if we will sign Williams following talks with the player this week.

“Regardless of the Ben Williams situation, if he had become available we might have made an offer for him because he has a good record at Championship and League One level,” Abbott added.

Vernon spent some of last season on loan at Northampton, scoring his only goal for them on his debut, after losing his place under Paul Lambert last season, although the player has said he will stay and fight for his place at the club.

Would Vernon going be a great loss?
