Just days after Colchester United boss Aidy Boothroyd lavished praise on shot stopper Ben Williams, U’s goalkeeping coach Ademola Bankole follows suite.

And Bankole’s praise saw him label the former Manchester United trainee as the best ‘keeper outside England’s top two divisions. I’ll agree there! Williams, signed before Boothroyd took over, cost the U’s a mere 60k – a fee which is proving to be a real bargain after an impressive few months.

Speaking to The Daily Gazette: ‘I think Ben is the best goalkeeper in the division.’

Bankole, who featured for a number of football league clubs during his playing career, also admitted Alex Smithies was the only other stopper anywhere close to Williams. With the Huddersfield Town youngster rated very highly, it shows just how highly-thought of Williams is too.

‘The only goalkeeper in my opinion who is close to him outside of Colchester is Alex Smithies,’ he concluded.

What about Kasper Schmeichel at Notts County?

Yeah, he wasn’t mentioned, but is a good keeper. Although I certainly feel Williams is up in the top three outside the Champ.
