Retired Colchester United goalkeeper Aidan Davison has admitted he has enjoyed every minute of his time with U’s.

Davison and his family are set to relocate to Florida next week, a move that will see the former Northern Ireland international take up a coaching role in the Major Soccer League. Davison’s career has spanned over two decades and he has featured for 14 different clubs in that time. He as player for; Billingham Synthonia, Notts County, Leyton Orient, Bury, Chester City, Blackpool, Millwall, Bolton Wanderers, Ipswich Town, Hull City, Sheffield United, Bradford City, Grimsby Town (twice) and finally the U’s.

Davison, who turns 40 at the weekend, joined the U’s in 2004 but has struggled with a shoulder injury this year. He has only started six games for the U’s this season, his last appearance came in the 1-0 away defeat to Coventry back in late October.

He told The Colchester Gazette: ‘I’d never have imagined that the Coventry game would have been my last.

‘But I have so many more good memories than bad ones to take from my career. I never focus on the negatives – I don’t see any point in that.

‘Apart from this season, I’ve been lucky with injuries and it’s time for a new chapter for me.’

Davison explained how injuries have forced him to hang up his gloves: ‘The decision to retire was made for me really because of my injuries.

‘It would have been nice to have played in the US but that’s not an option now.

‘This would have been my last season in the UK and I was hoping to play more of a part this year.

‘But I appreciate all of the support I’ve had from Colchester United and from the fans.’

He finally concluded on how he stayed At Layer road a lot longer than he anticipated: ‘I only initially came to Colchester for 12 months but I ended up staying for four years – and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.’
