Colchester chairman and owner, Robbie Cowling, has paid tribute to the manager Paul Lambert for binging in a host of new signings and says he is “very confident” ahead of the 2009-10 campaign.

Cowling, speaking on Dream 100 FM yesterday evening, said the Scot had a very clear list of players to buy this summer and, by making swift moves in the market, helped the club get “almost all” of their transfer targets.

“I`m very confident. I think that`s true of most football fans going into any season, but there are lots of reasons this season for us to be very optimistic,” he told the radio station. The U`s have signed four new faces as well as securing Ashley Vincent`s services from Cheltenham, following his loan.

Cowling continued: “I think it`s gone very well for us. Obviously we are going to find out in a few weeks just exactly how well it has gone. Paul Lambert was very well organised at the end of the season. In some ways, he was a bit too well-organised, because we were out there trying to get players in before other teams had even decided what they wanted to do.”

Late last night, Sky Sports reported that United had a double bid worth £250,000 for Hamilton striking duo, Richard Offiong and Joel Thomas, click here, just hours after he promised live on air that news of an attacking purchase would surface “in the next few days.”

“We were sort of ahead of the game, a little bit too ahead. I think we`ve done very well. We`ve managed to get most of the targets we were after,” Cowling explained.
