United`s Assistant Manager, Ian Culverhouse, is hoping that a good thing comes together when the squad face his former club Norwich City at the weekend.

Culverhouse played for the U`s first opponents of the 2009-10 season for nine years but goes back in a managerial capacity with Colchester, following what he called a “good” pre-season for the squad.

“They`ve done well. It`s been a grind and long month, keeping up the intensity in training that we`ve looked for and the work-ethic is very, very good. I think they [the players] are pleased that the month is finished and now we`re rolling into the big one on Saturday,” he said during a recorded interview on Dream 100 FM.

Paul Lambert`s No. 2 did concede however that the squad might not have been ready for three games in some weeks during July and the first part of August.

He said: “I think it showed in our last game that it [the pre-season schedule] might have been one-too-many for them. But it was important to get the minuets under their belt.

“Especially for the first two weeks, we worked really hard on endurance levels and then it was just trying to maintain match fitness as much as possible.”

He added that there were still things to work on before the first away trip since May: “We`ve also worked a lot on staying compact as a team in pre-season this year; we don`t want to be so spread out. We`ve still got to fine tune a few things going forward and work on a few set-plays.”
