Boss: United Have Overspent

Scottish boss Paul Lambert admitted in a BBC interview this week that Colchester United has spent beyond its means.

The former Celtic midfielder was quite candid when speaking on his hopes for the summer. “There will be a lot of players out of contract this summer and this football club has probably spent a lot of money which is not there, anymore,” he said.

When Lambert first arrived in Essex, he was on record as saying that the squad was bloated with personnel to fit to achieve the long-term aims he expects. But in recent weeks he has been saying that the squad is not big enough, after a few injuries a several loan agreements.

Now, as some approaches, Lambert is unequivocal in saying that funds will not be frittered away. He added: “We have to try and get people in that will help the team and help the lads that are here.”

When asked to qualify his statement on overspending, however, Lambert would only put his comment into a recession context. He denied that players at the club were valued too highly, or that he would be tightening his transfer budget.

‘I see players at Premier League wanting vast amounts of money and lower those at lower league level wanting absolute fortunes to come to this football club. I want people that are hungry,’ he added.

Do you think Colchester United have wasted money on players? Should Lambert sell before he can buy?

  • Matt_Us says:

Picking up the wages every week!! e should have been loaned….

  • StevieG Col U says:

Well, we made him available to loan but his partner was pregnent so he couldn’t move that far away. I think he should be given another chance.

For next season? Perhaps. I think he would have done about the same as Maybury.
