Colchester fans will be full of Christmas cheer as the U’s returned from Brighton with the points after a late goal from Scott Vernon.

Colchester and Scott Vernon stole the points late on in the second half after a match the U’s were very much second best, well at least in the first period.

Brighton had taken an early lead in the first half but were soon to play a big part of their own undoing. An over-hit back pass levelled the tie up, before Colchester manager Paul Lambert changed his formation and personnel.

Scott Vernon came on for Clive Platt and Steven Gillespie for Jonny Jackson as the U’s reverted back to 4-4-2 after playing most of the game with a five man midfield.

The tactic soon paid off with big Scotty slotting the winning sending the 300 Colchester fans back north with the points
