Aidy Boothroyd will play the diplomat over negotiations for Marc Tierney`s contract extension after implying the club cannot be held to ransom.

He also underlined how, despite reported interested from Championship-level teams and Tierney`s admission that he is holding out for the right terms, no player at Colchester is indispensible.

It is a logical attitude – after all, Tierney himself was not a name widely known amongst U`s fans before he arrived in from Shrewsbury Town in 2008.

The player, who rejected the club`s first offer to take his deal beyond the end of next season, has nevertheless indicated a willingness
Boothroyd`s measured response, in the East Anglian Daily Times: “What will happen is that we will sit down and make him an offer. If he decides to sign then brilliant, if he doesn`t sign then we`ll see what happens after that.”

The situation seems to mirror recent talks with previously popular players, Dean Hammond and Pat Baldwin – one stayed and the other instead moved on.

While Hammond, now with Southampton, was subject to a very private pursuit, current Southend loanee Baldwin was much more open last summer when talks appeared to have stalled.

There is no player at this club that can`t be replaced – I honestly believe that,” said Boothroyd.

We`ll do everything we can to keep Marc, but sometimes players just don`t want to stay for whatever reason. I think Marc wants to stay; I like him, I think he likes me, so we`ll see where that takes us.

The player’s present terms expire at the end of next season.

  • Well, not sure whether this contract speculation is the cause, but he aint looked up to his usual standard in the past couple of week… Think its essential to sort this out – if he’s stayin sort out the contract if not then its best to cash in!
