Chairman and owner Robbie Cowling has told new manager John Ward that although he will be backed this summer, he may well have to sell before he can buy.

At the moment we have still got a fairly high number of players under contract here,” Cowling told yesterday`s press conference to announce the former Cheltenham Town and York City man as Aidy Boothroyd`s successor.

Cowling added: “But there are limitations, John does have to work within a budget and so it`s not always going to be as easy as adding players to the squad all the time.

He will have restrictions but I will do, as I always have tried to, the best job I can for the club and the manager. John will be no different – I`ll do my absolute best for him.”

Ward, who made personal calls to three previously fringe players at the club, is assessing his options as he prepares for the summer transfer market to open.

Presumably wary of fuelling media guessing-games, Ward refused to specify an absolutely ideal number of players he would like to work with in the coming months but it is clear he will have to keep Cowling`s obvious note of caution in mind.
