Colchester’s League 1 survival hopes took another crushing blow, as did our goal-difference, when we were thrashed at promotion chasing Chesterfield on Tuesday with a defeat leaving us well and truly in the bottom four.

Not only were we beaten at the Proact Stadium we were thrashed with Chesterfield running out six-bill winners with the game over with barely 15-minutes played!

Roberts (6) put Chesterfield ahead early on with Clucas (16 & 17) striking twice in a minute to leave us three-down with just 17-minutes played….

Having made it through until half time without an further damage we conceded again just before the four when Gardner (58) scored from distance with the fifth coming from Ryan (60) minutes later.

When Lewington fouled Roberts in the area it led to a penalty, which Roberts (84) himself took to round off a six-nil thrashing!

Victory leaves Chesterfield well on course for the play-offs while we are second-bottom with already relegated Yeovil catching us….
Scunthorpe (h)
We’re still capable of achieving survival but with such a poor goal-difference our three-point deficit to safety is more like four really! We know we’ve got to react positively in our next game against relegation rivals Scunthorpe, but will we?
