Another day of unfounded suggestion and speculative gossip as the goalposts unofficially move closer to appointing the successor to now-Norwich boss… oh, you know the rest by now!

All the best-renowned unemployed managers at mostly lower-league level have been tipped as the next Colchester United boss within the last 24-hours – Steve Cotterill, Glenn Roeder and Aidy Boothroyd enjoyed a renascence as the guessing-game got chronic.

Former Watford boss, Boothroyd, according to everyone you talk to and yet no-one in particular, is rumoured to have already sealed a golden handshake with Colchester`s directors, having supposedly met them this week.

Consensus said almost the same thing Ronnie Moore a day prior, but with nothing official to either confirm or deny it, that story looks like an inevitable false link.

Then again, so did the Lambert story and Vital got egg on our face with that one, so read us, by-all-means… just don`t quote me!

The Press also played catch-up with the story that current caretaker Joe Dunne ruled himself out of the running for the post and another name to surface was Paul Jewell, ex-Wigan and Derby County manager.

The only outstanding possible fact of the day was that Dunne`s last game might be this afternoon`s home tie against Leeds, as he conjectured yesterday a new face may be in place by the time Colchester meet Gillingham for the Johnston`s Paint Trophy.

  • After all the names it would be ironic if Glenn Roeder was given the job, because… well… he’s not exactly a hit as a manager!! But if he could get Arturo Lupoli to play for the U’s, I’d be happy!

  • Boothroyd is one of the favourites for the Barnsley job now. No way do we want the chinless wonder Roeder
