A host of new names surfaced as Colchester reeled in a final six faces to contest their much-publicised vacancy in the 24-hours between Sunday and Monday.

The East Anglian Daily Times were first to add a new name, after U`s Chairman Robbie Cowling made it known that just six candidates remain in the race to replace Paul Lambert after his 312-day tenure in Essex. They identified former Nottingham Forest manager, Colin Calderwood, as a fresh contender.

The Sun newspaper also suggested that Peter Taylor, who had previously been proposed by Norwich City fans as a potential successor to Bryan Gunn, entered the fray.

Additionally, while one-time U`s player Paul Buckle of Torquay United ruled himself out of the running, a name north of Hadrian`s Wall, Gus MacPherson rubbished speculation in Scotland that he had been sounded-out from St. Mirren for the job.

John Still (Dagenham and Redbridge) and Mark Robins (Rotherham) were both quick to condemn conjecture that they too were in any kind of talks with the Essex outfit across Saturday and Sunday.

Vital Colchester also published a timely network exclusive from former boss Geraint Williams, in which he blamed an all-too rapid player-turnover for the club`s Championship demise.

U`s owner-Chairman, Robbie Cowling, said the club are considering applying for a possible points deduction to publish Norwich City for inducing Lambert into contravening his Colchester contract.
