Following Pual Lambert’s Norwich switch, the speculation over Colchester’s next boss mounts. Vital brings you up-to-speed with the lastest candidates…

JOINING THE RACE:

Caretaker Joe Dunne cautiously threw his hat into the ring for the position at Colchester by saying he would love to manage “at some stage” although wanted to remain focused on the forthcoming league tie against MK Dons.

Torquay United boss Paul Buckle also said he was “flattered” at being mentioned in the same breath as one of his former playing-day haunts – he could stall on signing a new contract now that this position has become available.

Julian Dicks, currently managing with non-league Wivenhoe, either bravely or stupidly committed the equivalent of a professional foul as he said he would be putting fourth his C.V with a view to vying for the job. Safe to say the former Liverpool and West Ham man would be far from a popular choice.

Fans have been tipping many names, among them an exciting prospect in Gustavo Poyet – the former assistant at Swindon, Leeds and Tottenham is currently twiddling this thumbs, like scores of others in the industry. Just who are the “world-renowned names” who have already contacted the club?

Gary Speed, currently coaching at Sheffiled United is another ballpark name, although he has yet to officially retire after an injury and could still be playing in the Championship next season.

Was approached by Swansea City in the summer about taking on thier club and could be a safe bet for the U’s if they are looking to continue a tradition of hiring people of primising, young, potential.

LEAVING THE RACE:

Teddy Sheringham didn`t feel the post required him to open his mouth and ingratiate Colchester with a response on their vacancy, telling his agent to simply say in yesterday`s Gazette: “Teddy will not be applying for the job.”

Most others under contract as the U`s have all-but admitted they cannot afford to look hypocritical in appointing their new manager in the same way as Norwich City lured Paul Lambert; not when verging on a probably lengthy compensation battle over his exit.

Julian Dicks – is he still with Wivenhoe? Thought he was only helping out at the back end of last season and owns/runs a bar in spain. NO THANKS anway!
Gus Poyet – really not sure to be honest
Gary Speed – again, not too sure

… yeah, I know – just adding those who people have been mentioning and who might fit with what the U’s want to do. It’s all speculation of course. I agree – no Dicks at Col U, thanks!

Well would love Joey Dunne to step in and do well. That would be my first choice.
