Having famously predicted that Colchester United would be “victims of their own success” when it came to hanging onto star personnel of the Championship’s smallest squad, manager Geraint Williams has again admitted how tough it is warning away the big sides.

“I always felt at the start of the season we had the nucleus of a squad who could compete in this division and finishing 10th proved we can,’ Welshman Williams told the club’s official website recently.

Having lost 18-goal man Chris Iwelumo to Charlton last week, the U’s know it will be tough next season, but Williams added that personnel poaching was merely a fact of life: “Any manager wouldn’t be doing his job if he wasn’t looking at our players.”
