A dramatic final day League 1 survival was secured by Colchester on Sunday as we ended Preston’s automatic promotion hopes – MK Dons went up in second – with a win, which we had to get, to stay up.

With a penalty having been missed it wasn’t looking like it was going to be our day until a later goal secured us a one-nil win and meant that we stayed up and comfortably in the end really as we leapt out of the bottom four to survive by a couple of points in the end!

As expected the nerves were evident in the first half with chances limited, Huntington didn’t do enough Preston’s best chance with Norwich loanee Murphy going close but his lob just went wide.

Early in the second half the chance we had been waiting for came when Preston ‘keeper Johnstone brought down Moncur and we had a penalty. Porter stepped up but his penalty was wilder and went over the bar!

Garner, who has been so deadly for Preston this season, had a couple of chances to score but his failure to take them cost his side in the end with Moncur (82) making no mistake as he took up a good position to finish off from a Porter cut back, after he had brought the ball down well and allowed the former West Ham man to get into space, late on.

With another survival bid secured we’ll be looking for more next season whereas Preston now have to come through the play-offs to get into the Championship, something they’ve never managed in nine previous play-off bids!
Successful season?
We stayed in League 1 but we would have hoped for a little more than survival back in August wouldn’t we?
