Colchester United FC, in tandem with the imminent development of the club’s Community Stadium by June 2008, are stepping up the search for a new training base.

The Essex outfit, whose convent with the local council prevents excessive use of Layer Road beyond matchdays, want a new home to hone their skills and feel that current sites Essex University and Shrub End sports ground will become outmoded.

The plan to relocate was revealed in the Colchester Evening Gazette last Friday. The paper reported that the U’s ambitious owner Robbie Cowling has a commitment to improving facilities for his side and has already considered Tiptree-based sports ground Worrior’s Rest as a viable alternative to current options.

On the matter, Mr Cowling told the Gazette: “We are committed to giving the first team quality training facilities, hopefully in the next 12 months.

“I can’t say where, otherwise we might lose them,” added Cowling in response to where the club might be looking to train.
