Matthew Connolly wants to break into the starting XI with Arsenal next season by impressing Arsen Wenger at Colchester United.

The young centre-back, described as “too good” for reserve team football by his French boss back in August has just won his place back in the side following a suspension and the emergence of Adam Virgo at the back.

However, since Virgo succumbed to injury, and may also be used as a forward, Connolly has reasserted himself in the U`s back line and now wants to play in every game between now and the end of the season.

He talked of his delight when watching the Gunners young crop ease to victory in the Carling Cup on Wednesday and told Colchester United’s official website today: “I’ve got to be honest and my main aim is to play for Arsenal but in the meantime I’m happy to be here and playing first-team football.

“I want to play in every game; I want to stay in the side,” added the 20-year-old.

Don’t reckon he will break into the Arsenal first team for a couple of years or so.
