Colchester United are in contention to sign Luton Town`s skipper Chris Coyne, despite the U`s having had an undisclosed bid knocked back last week.

Over the weekend Colchester boss Geraint Williams confirmed he has maintained an interest in the Australian defender, indentified as the man who will sure up a leaky Layer Road defence.

Williams has gone on record as saying in the EADT: “We are still attempting to sign Chris Coyne.

“I’m trying to sign new players, but so are all clubs from all the divisions.”

He has added that the club`s poor league placing – they are 23rd – is not helping sway potential targets as they ponder signing on the dotted line.

In Coyne`s case, though, Luton`s perilous financial situation may play into Colchester`s hands.

The administration-threatened club may lose their captain for a nominal fee, should he choose to excurse a right to leave due to unpaid wages.

The 29-year-old admitted: “I love Luton but the club might want me out due to the financial position.”

… I think all parties will benefit here, although I’ve my reservations about a League One CB who is 29!! Sitll, U’s can dictate fee to an extent I would have imagined.

Well we need someone with experiance and that only comes with age so I think he could be ideal.
