COLCHESTER UNITED have secured the services of rookie goalkeeper Mark Cousins for a further two-years.

The Chelmsford-born stopper put pen-to-paper on a new contract on Friday after breaking into the first-team picture last season. Cousins featured 13 times under boss Paul Lambert and looks set to compete with Dean Gerken for the U’s goalkeeping jersey next season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: ‘It was a good opportunity for me to commit for another two years.

‘I played 13 games last season and to me that showed that the manager has faith in me to play me.’

Cousins revealed how much he has enjoyed featuring for the U’s in 2008/09, he added: ‘It has given me a taste for first team action, and I hope to get more games under my belt next season.’

‘Myself and Dean (Gerken) are following the rest of the players’ programmes at the moment and I am sure that there will be plenty of running in there.’
