Youth trainee product Mark Cousins has vowed to retain his number one spot his season after inheriting it from the previously impressive Ben Williams.

Williams, last season`s stand-out performer in goal, sustained a pre-season injury and although arguably fit, in recent weeks has remained second choice.

Cousins has taken his chance, meanwhile, having formally watched action from the bench in almost all his time with the side, bar a short run of matches under previous boss Paul Lambert.

The stopper told the Gazette: “I`m very pleased with way the season has gone so far. I would never have expected to have got a run of nine games at the start of the season. Unfortunately for Ben he`s been injured and now he`s fit again there`s even more competition now, so it`s up to me to stay in the team.
