Chris Coyne says he will not repeat the same mistakes this summer that he believes cost him almost a whole season of competitive football.

Coyne, 30, was supposed to lead Colchester as captain in their new stadium at the start of a new era and the 2007/8 season.

Instead, the £350,000 signing had a season beset by injuries and speculation over his commitment to the club.

He has been continually linked with a return to his homeland in Australia.

Now, Coyne has spoken about his poor form in the East Anglian Daily Times.

The defender said: ‘This season has been really disappointing for me, and I put that down to not having a pre-season for the first time in my career.’ Coyne.

He was involved in a series of international games last summer.

Coyne, however, will be better rested this time around. ‘We have some big games coming up. We only need one more point to qualify,’ he said, taliking about the summer 2009 World Cup Qualifiers.

‘After that I’ll be wrapping myself up in cotton wool this time.

‘I want to make sure that I am ready for next season, and the manager has given me an extra week to recover. I’ll be back on July 6/7 rather than July 1,’ he explained..

So can Coyne get back to his best, or is he past it?
