A potentially crucial three-points were secured by Colchester at the weekend as we won a ‘basement battle’ in league 1.

Colchester went to bottom placed Crewe Alexandra’s Gresty Road on Saturday with us both in the relegation zone, but come 5pm on Saturday after a 3-0 win we had lifted ourselves out of the bottom four.

The game, as expected, was tight with the first half ending goalless but it burst into life with three-goals in a 10-minute period after the break.

Freddie Sears (57) broke the deadlock just ahead of the hour when he turned home a Sanchez Watt cross from close range.

Minutes later, and just after the hour, it was two-nil when Rhys Healey (63) came off the bench to score his first goal since arriving on loan from Cardiff City. A through ball from Gavin Massey left him with Ben Garratt to beat and he made no mistake.

Sears returned to the compliment to Watt (67), via an Alan Tate deflection from his cross, to complete the scoring at the midway point of the half.
