Colchester United are through in the League Cup first round for the first time in two years after a convincing 3-0 victory over Hereford.

The club faced the same side in the F.A. Cup last season and only managed a slender and arrow 1-0 positive, but this time a Dave Mooney double helped put Colchester into the second round in a competition the club has notoriously underperformed in during recent seasons.

The side last reached the Third Round in 2004-5 when they drew Southampton and have failed to progress past the first fixture in four of the last five years, falling to Leyton Orient, Shrewsbury, MK Dons and Cardiff at the first time of asking.

Ian Henderson added a superb clincher-goal from eighteen yards as he was unchallenged and almost invited to pick his spot with the game all-but closed out.

Manager John Ward said he was delighted with his side and the only downside to the comfortable evening where the ankle injuries sustained by Reading loanee Mooney and other new signing, Andrew Bond.
