U’s stopper Dean Gerken is set to extend his stay at League Two promotion chasers Darlington for another month.

Gerken, who is a product of the U’s youth system, has enjoyed a fruitful spell with Dave Penney’s side, keeping two clean sheets out of a possible four so far. The 23-year-old admitted to local press that the move has been the ‘kick up the backside’ he needed. Vital Colchester reported this, to read the article click here.

U’s manager Paul Lambert told the club’s official website: ‘Dean is doing just fine up there and he will be staying up for at least another month.

‘We have got Jimmy (Walker) here at the moment and being at Darlington gets Dean games.’

However, the U’s have inserted a 24-hour recall clause in this latest deal.

Think while we’ve got Jimmy here it can only be good for Deano to be playing regularly out on loan. Keep up the good work Deano! Up the U’s!

That is true – Dean has to keep playing – he said so himself, too! He’ll be back, for sure.
