Promotion contenders West Brom visit Layer Road on Saturday, prompting Colchester United`s assistant manager Micky Adams to highlight the need for of a first-class defensive display. The U`s have only kept one clean sheet all season, that coming in the emphatic 3-0 victory over Preston, at Deepdale.

The next visitors come with a host of attacking talent, the likes of veteran forward Kevin Phillips, on-loan Manchester City forward Ishmael Miller and Scottish international Craig Beattie, not to mention a whole array of quality midfielders to choose from. This suggests that Colchester`s defence will need to have an excellent day, especially if the U`s are to get something from the game.

Adams told the Colchester Evening Gazette: “If you look at the goals-against column, there is no one single person you can point the finger at and say they are making errors too often.”

He added: “It is a case of individual people switching off at the wrong time.”

The fact that the U`s might well be under the cosh for most of the game is something of which Adams is only too aware. He added: “They have some fantastic players at the business end of the pitch and we have to be mindful of it.”
