Former Fulham and Millwall man Matthew Briggs, formerly the youngest ever Premier League footballer when he made his Fulham debut at 16-years-old and 65-days, has returned to Colchester.

A successful loan spell with us last season saw him play his part in keeping us in League 1 with Tony Humes always keen to bring him back on a permanent basis, which we’ve now done following his release by Millwall.

The Guyana international, previously he played for England at levels up to U21, has signed a two-year contract to stay at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

24-year-old Briggs will be a fine signing.

To bring him in on a free transfer even better as he’s more than capable of doing a job for us at this level as we look for a much better season next time round after several seasons of struggle, with the last campaign the worst!
