Joe Dunne has moved to fill the vacant left-back slot in the U’s side by bringing in 26-year-old Ryan Dickson on a free transfer.

Dickson, a free agent, had impressed on trial in recent weeks following his release by Southampton in the summer, featuring in the games with Tottenham, Braintree and Ipswich.

The full-back started his career with Plymouth and had spent a short time with the Pilgrims on trial this summer before he turned up in Essex.

The left-back berth has been one Dunne has been eager to fill following the departure of John White, with Bradley Garmston being kept by West Brom.

Ian Harte had been mooted as someone who was due to trial with the U’s before signing for newly-promoted Bournemouth, but Dunne has found his man in Dickson.

Speaking to the official site, the former Brentford defender said: ‘I am ready to get back to my top form and help Colchester push on, because I think we’ve got a good chance with some real talented players here.’

Dunne will still be keen to bring in some cover in that role though, with youngster Michael O’Donoghue the only other able player for the position.

Hope Ryan does well for you as I was surprised he didn’t get more of a chance with us.
