Ryan Dickson was the U’s last pre-season signing, filling the left back berth made vacant by the departures of Michael Rose, Bradley Garmston and John White.

The 26-year-old has only missed one game of the U’s campaign so far, sitting out the 1-1 draw with Carlisle recently due to sickness, with youngster Tosin Olufemi filling in the gap.

With an attacking mindset, the full back has slotted in well to Joe Dunne’s plans so far and, speaking to BBC Essex last weekend, he admitted that he was always confident of doing so.

‘I knew when I joined it would be a good match for me,’ he explained. ‘I fitted in very well, I like the boys and the style of play and there is a positive atmosphere here.

‘We haven’t been played off the park so far, it’s just one of those things and it’s just football.’

The U’s lost their unbeaten league record on Saturday during a 2-1 defeat to Leyton Orient, and Joe Dunne’s side can consider themselves unfortunate to have lost out in a closely-fought battle.

There were a number of opportunities for the team to grab something from the game, whilst a host of chances went begging in the draw at home to Carlisle the week before.

Although the chances are arriving in abundance, the side need to find a way of converting those opportunities as they present themselves – and Dickson agrees.

‘I think we’re looking really good and playing some good stuff,’ he suggested. ‘We create chances but we need to convert those. It will come together and the main thing is that we’re creating them.

‘Personally, I think we can be up there or thereabouts this season, so we need to keep up the positive atmosphere we have.’
