Defeat in midweek against Walsall all but ended Colchester’s chances of forcing themselves into the league one play-offs.

Having gone ten unbeaten, but drawn five on the spin, The U’s were in with an outsight chance of gate crashing the play-offs.

Ahead of the weekend game John Ward, as he told The Gazette, conceded that Colchester will not make the play-offs now: ‘realistically, we are out of the picture now.

‘There was just a chance if he had won on Tuesday night, but we’re not going to make the play-offs now.’

Although at the same time you can never say never!

Seven straight wins, even if it seems unlikely, could be enough and he also knows that: ‘however, if we won seven out of seven, then who knows what that will bring?’

A draw at Exeter on Saturday really has ended these play-off hopes now though.
