To many, the U’s biggest problem so far this season has been an inability to convert the plenty of chances falling their way in the games to date.

Against Port Vale, Joe Dunne’s side had chance after chance before sneaking a 1-0 win with a late goal. A fortnight later, and an even greater number went begging as the U’s scraped a 1-1 draw against struggling Carlisle.

Last week the side lost their first game of the season, despite having a number of opportunities to snatch something from the game – indeed, Orient taking their chances was the difference.

However, despite this, Dunne has reacted angrily to calls for a better strike conversion whilst speaking to BBC Essex, insisting the the players go through plenty of shooting practice.

‘We work on shooting practice in training, Freddie Sears scored two in two, Jabo Ibehre, Sanchez Watt and Gavin Massey are all playing well,’ he stated. ‘Who would I leave out if I brought in a forward?

‘It’s the early part of the season, we’ve scored every game. Last year people called for Searsy to play, now he’s playing, playing well and we’re creating chances.’

When Carlisle arrived at the Weston Homes they had shipped thirteen goals in their opening three games and were desperately looking to get themselves off the mark.

An early goal from Matty Robson gave the Cumbrians something to hold on to and, certainly in the second half, they made every effort to ensure the waves of U’s attacks were thwarted.

However, in the U’s three home games this season there have been thirty-three efforts from Dunne’s side and only three goals, which is surely a concern as they look to achieve something more this season.

‘I’ve heard this argument all week about a striker and not putting chances away, and I’m getting sick of it now,’ Dunne continued. ‘It’s difficult to break down when there are ten players behind the ball.

‘Against Orient, when we did get behind them we had the ball in the net ruled out for offside and Drey Wright ws brought down for a stonewall penalty.’
