U’s boss Joe Dunne was extremely pleased with his side after last weekend’s draw with Carlisle, despite the winning goal proving elusive as the U’s pressed their opponents.

Freddie Sears’ strike midway through the second half eventually grabbed a point for the U’s, but Dunne’s side battered the Cumbrian’s box with chances and opportunities to get the winner.

It never came, though, and although Carlisle went into the game having endured a tough start to the season, Dunne was pleased that his team stuck to their passing guns.

‘I can’t fault the players because we were outstanding,’ he gushed to BBC Essex after the game. ‘We peppered their box and they were hanging on. If we had got the second I think we’d have gone on and scored more.

‘We’ve played quality, exhilerating football and we’ll win a lot more games playing like that – we felt we’d have opportunities if we moved the ball quickly and we had opportunities galore.

‘The players are disappointed and, with our play and chances, we’re due a heavy win – we’re just missing that ball going into the net.’

Carlisle went into the game at the Weston Homes having suffered defeats in each of their opening three fixtures, watching thirteen goals hit the back of their net in the process, too.

However, they saw the return of a number of key and experienced players for them in Friday’s game, and perhaps the crowd who turned up hoping to see a number of goals weren’t completely aware of this.

For Dunne, though, he insisted it was something the team were aware of: ‘That’s the best side they’ve been able to get out as I’ve been saying, but they had notihng to lose.

‘The first half was end to end and, credit to them, they hit us on the break.’
