EADT Claim Possible White Exit

The East Anglian Daily Times suggests today that defender John White has been earmarked to leave the club, despite his versatility and popularity.

It is not officially known if the U`s defender travelled to Germany with the rest of the club`s pre-season squad yesterday, but White is cebtrally in front of Phil Ifil in the terms of selection of full-back.

The report today circles White, still just 22, as a possible contender as next to go in a summer that has already seen his fellow ex-youth-teamer, Dean Gerken, shown the door.

White, who has played more than 100 games for United, functions mostly as a full-back but has also played in central defence, and even in midfield.

He played in 30 matches last season and was an important member of the side which won promotion to the Championship in 2006.

The paper confirms that manager Paul Lambert is still looking to trim his squad.

The Scot says he wants two new strikers to round of an impressive recruitment drive this summer of five signings so far, having previously indicated he wants to work with around 22 players next season.

Strikers Scott Vernon and Jamie Guy look set to leave before August, but White`s name seems something of a surprise addition to the exit mix.

No surprise really, Lambert said he cant garuntee reguglar football and that he could leave.

  • Matt_Us says:

I had heard that. Hasn’t Lambo heard of squad rotation?! If he doesn’t want Ifil, or White, it’s just Maybury at RB…. and that’s not good enough. Or is it?!

  • ooohhJohnnieJackson says:

White is a better full back than Maybury in my opinion and I think we would be stupid to let him go

  • Matt_Us says:

Exactly my view too. Young, expeienced, well-liked and likes the club. Can play in a few positions… he should stay!

  • StevieG Col U says:

Yep, my view too, love Whitey, dont really rate Maybury but you cant blame him if he goes for not playing enough.

  • up_the_u's_aaron says:

He made a mistake against Tiptree and I immediatley looked at Paul Lambert and he did not look happy.

  • Matt_Us says:

… well ok… but then again, would you WANT him to be happy? You can’t read too much into that, nor with the penatly that Ifil gave away, Of course he isn’t going to be pleased! Tiptree, it’s a fact, are nowhere near the standard the club will face next season but it was first game so… there’s not too many conclusions you can draw from a game like that. If O’Neil puts out a good XI at Villa and we do well, then everyone can relax a little!

  • StevieG Col U says:

Yep, fair point. Up the U’s!

  • Matt_Us says:

At least the training pictures from the camp in Germany put an end to that rubbish about him not joining up with the sqad. Not AWOL, like those ‘Boro boys!!

  • StevieG Col U says:

I really dont think their taken in Germany. . .

  • Matt_Us says:

I suppos not, it seems, as those pictures have the old kit on. The club did tell us they were from Germany… time to take the word “exclusive” off the front page at the top, then!
