Joel Thomas scored his first Colchester United, goal but it was not enough to see his side win at Ebbsfleet United.
Boss Paul Lambert gave youth team defender Tom Bender a berth in the U’s defence, as he rotated the pack.
And the U’s took the lead inside quarter-of-an-hour, with Thomas touching Clive Platt’s goal-ward header into the net.
The U’s should have gone into half-time with a bigger advantage after wasting a number of first-half chances.
Early in the second period and the Blue Square Premier side drew level. Ishmael Welsh headed home a cross at the back-post to beat Mark Cousins in the U’s goal.
Injury-jinxed striker Steven Gillespie was given a run-out after the break, as the U’s looked for a winner, but they were forced to settle for a draw.
The U’s now travel to Rushden & Diamonds tomorrow in the last pre-season workout.
Should the U’s have won? Or was a draw fair?
