Former Colchester United star Greg Halford has joined Sheffield United on a season-long loan.

The Sunderland defender joins the Blades following a loan spell with Charlton at the back end of last season.

Chelmsford-born Halford told BBC Radio Sheffield: ‘Promotion is first and foremost, it’s a massive club with good players here.

‘It’s going to be a tough season but promotion is definitely on the cards.’

Halford, who played in a number of roles in his time with the U’s, left North Essex in January 2007 to join Reading in a record £2.5m pound deal. After failing to settle at the Madejski Stadium, Reading offloaded him to Sunderland for £3.5m. He was then loaned to Charlton for the second half of last season.

Vital Colchester would like to wish Greg the best of luck with Sheffield United.
