Fight Is On To Keep Curo

Colchester United manager Geraint Williams has this morning vowed to fight for Jamie Cureton`s long-term commitment following yesterday`s transfer request by the 31-year-old hit-man.

The foward, who scored 24 times last season in all, had said that the club lack ambition, but Geraint is determined to prove him wrong by re-opening negotiations on a new contract, which Cureton revealed in a written statement yesterday had ‘broken down.’

On the club’s official website, Williams said: “We are obviosuly disappointed that Jamie feels he is in a position where he has had to hand in a transfer request.

“His sucsess last season put him in the limelight, but wee are looking foward to building the future at Colchester United and we are keen for Jamie to be a part of that,” he said.

The Welshman went ontop add that he hopes Cureton can be persuaded not to leave the Essex club, and is confident that there is still time to re-sign him before his current deal expires next summer.

“I will stress we do not want to sell Jamie – we want to keep him at the club. We would like him to stay and we want him to be happy to stay at Colchester United,” added Williams.

“To that end, we will be continuing talks about extending his contract and hope to come to an agreement soon.”
