Colchester United manager Geraint Williams has today released Kevin Watson, Luke Guttridge, Tom Webb and Tom Devaux.

Speaking to CU-FC.com, Williams explained: ‘Basically, the lads I’ve told today weren’t in squad travelling north for Sunday’s game.

‘With that in mind, it was not right to make them wait to hear of my decision – their season was at a close and so it was the right time to get them in and tell them my thoughts.’

Watson, who joined the U’s from Reading in 2004, has clocked up over 150 appearances in a blue and white striped shirt. The 34-year-old was an integral part of the U’s success in recent seasons, but has been plagued by injuries this year.

Williams said: ‘Kevin has been a fantastic servant to the club, he has been an integral part of our recent success and we have missed him this year.

‘Playing through him got our passing game going and that has been something we missed.

‘He has struggled with injuries through the year and being situated away from the club didn’t help that, so I felt that it was the right time for him to move on and get some success at a new club.’

Meanwhile, Guttridge joined the U’s about a year ago but has found first-team opportunities limited.

‘Luke came in and showed signs of the undoubted ability he has got, but I felt that he didn’t quite gel with his partners in midfield.

‘We wish him all the very best and I am sure that there will be clubs that will want to use his ability and will give him a run in the team,’ the Welshmen added.

Likewhise, youngsters Webb and Devaux have been regulars in the reserves but have found it hard to break first-team so will also be allowed to find a new club.

I see… so Kevin Watto will retire (thanks, you’ve been a great player for the club) and Vernon and Hammond are the replacements. Equally, no news on Davison. He must be staying for next season. Shh, don’t tell his wife!!
