David Fox’s Colchester career is over with it confirmed that he’s not coming back next season, something we already knew Jabo Ibehre wouldn’t either with him signing for Carlisle.

Tony Humes was keen to keep Fox but an agreement couldn’t be reached with him and his return to the U’s last season is as far as his time with us will go.

A return to the north west is something that he’s also keen on to be with his family again.

Commenting on the Official Website Humes expressed his gratitude to Fox for the part he played in our successful relegation battle last season.

‘David’s family are settled in the north west, so he had a big decision to make. We did talk about a contract but unfortunately we couldn’t quite come to an agreement.

‘He committed a lot to us last season in being away from his family, but he did a fantastic job for us.

‘He was keen to get back playing and he helped the team to safety, so we thank him for that.’

With Fox’s departure a new defensive midfielder is being sought although Humes also revealed that he wasn’t unsurprised by this move and had been prepared for it with alternative options drawn up.

That list will now be looked through as we look to find his replacement, along with another midfielder with a couple of players anticipated at the WHCS next week.

As for Ibehre he’s now dropped down to League 2 to sign for Carlisle next season, signing a one-year contract following his U’s release.
