Ex-Southend United forward Francis Laurent is being given the chance to impress manager John Ward.

The former Shrimper had an unsuccessful trial with Coventry and Sheffield United this summer and has been a free agent since the end of last season.

The 24-year-old is set to feature in tonight`s reserve game against Stevenage and if signed would provide competition for Reading loan signing Dave Mooney and the imposing Kayode Odejayi.

Colchester are looking for a striker following the departures of Clive Platt, Kevin Lisbie (Millwall / Ipswich) and Joel Thomas (Hamilton Academicals) over the summertime.

Might be ok, think he can also play wide right but he doesn’t exactly score goals and not sure how an ex-Southend player will be received
