New U’s loanee Bradley Garmston has admitted that he has arrived in Essex with the aim of breaking into Joe Dunne’s side in the short time that he is set to be here.

Although touted as being cover for John White who currently holds the left-back berth, Brian Wilson departed from the pitch last weekend with injury to be replaced at right-back by Tom Eastman.

Perhaps, therefore, John White could be set to switch to right-back this weekend in the visit to Sheffield United with Garmston filling in at left-back, and it is a scenario the Republic of Ireland U19s international admits he would relish.

Speaking to BBC Essex, he said: ‘It would be fantastic to be involved at Bramall Lane and to make my league debut there.

‘I can keep learning and improving just being around everyone here, but I’m definitely aiming to get into that team.’

A young loan signing has been on the cards for a while now, with Joe Dunne admitting previously over the last fortnight that the player he was keen to bring in was away on international duty.

Garmston revealed that Dunne had spoken to him after his performance for his country against the Czech Republic last week.

‘Joe came last week and told me afterwards that I’d had a good game,’ he continued. ‘It’s fantastic that he’s shown his belief in me to come down here and make an impact on the squad, so I’m delighted and excited with the move.

‘This is all part of my development; first team football is about winning and it’s the level you need to be competing at, so I’m here to do a job for the team, learn as much as I can and to help out.’

The U’s head into Saturday’s trip to Bramall Lane in high spirits, with three wins from the last four helping the side climb out of the bottom four.

Elsewhere, results have been going in the U’s favour and Bradley admits that this should make it an easier environment to settle into.

He finished: ‘The side has been in decent form over the last few games and that’s good to come into; it means there is belief in the team, high spirits and confidence to keep that run up.’
