Colcheser`s Dean Gerken has told a rival fanzine of his newfound confidence in the Championship`s worst backline of the season after the promising additions of Chris Coyne and Paul Ifil during the recent transfer window.

Ahead of this afternoon`s trip to Burnley, he told the website myfootballwriter that he thinks the club will soon end an appalling run of conceding a goal in every game for the last 26 consecutive fixtures.

On the League`s leakiest defence, which has so far seen 49 goals fly in at the wrong end of the pitch, Gerken said: ‘I hope that clean sheet is just round the corner, but at the end of the day if we don’t get another clean sheet all the way through the rest of the year and still stay up, I’ll take that!’

He also said he felt “one hundred times” more comfortable with his new team-mates in front of him.

‘We were good in spits and spurts before but I think now with Coyney (Chris Coyne, signed from Luton) involved and Phil (Ifil, from Spurs) especially the quality on the ball is unbelievable.

‘But Coyney is an organiser and we missed that a bit, he’s a vocal person on the pitch and we look a lot more solid for having him,’ added Gerken.

‘The back four all know their positions a bit more now, they know exactly what they have to do and what they don’t have to do so it’s looking better, and hopefully it will keep heading that way.’
