Colchester United striker Steven Gillespie feels his sending-off tackle at Crewe Alexandra only warranted a yellow card.

The U’s record-signing was given his marching orders three minutes from time, at Gresty Road, for a challenge on Danny Woodards. It was the 23-year-old’s fourth red-card of his career.

The ex-Cheltenham Town front-man, post-match, said: ‘It was a foul – but I thought it was only a yellow card.

‘The game was not going particularly well for us and I was fired up to do well.

‘I wanted to show that I was giving my all,’ he revealed.

‘I went in hard but I think if you don`t do that, you get hurt yourself.’

Gillespie now faces a three-match ban.

Well, not sure, but we’ll be without him for three games so have just got to get on with it and should give others a chance.
