Goalie Williams Talking U`s Terms

Surprise transfer target Ben Williams could be a Colchester player by next week as Carlisle today accepted an undisclosed bid for the goalkeeper.

Williams, 26, was only singed from Crew last summer but now could join Paul Lambert`s U`s in competition with current keepers, Dean Gerken and Mark Cousins.

All are young and fairly inexperienced, but if he signs, unless he is prepared to come as a possible reserve, Williams will probably displace Gerken at United.

Cousins, after all, has just signed a new contract, while Gerken spent much of last season on loan at Darlington.

Colchester`s interest was first reported yesterday as a bid was being prepared, as shown here on Vital U`s.

Greg Abbott, Carlisle manager, spoke about the bid on their official website: “There has been an offer for Ben and he is now talking to Colchester to see if it is a move that he wants to make,” he said.

He added that there could be a possible complication with the switch, which will be revealed in the coming days.

Williams is a former Manchester United youngster who spent four years with Crew before transfering a year ago.

So talks appear advanced. Where will Williams fit in?

What are we doing???? Paying money for a goalkeeper when we already have 2 decent stoppers and should be spending the cash up the other end of the field!!! I was thinking that Lambo was pretty shrewd in the transfer market given who he had brought in since joining.

I don’t know!! He is young, but then again so are our other stoppers. If we already have two then it seems like a waste of money. We want a striker!!

Seems very strange, Gerken + Cousins are more than capable in League One. I would like to see Cousins go out on a season-long loan deal to a L2 club and then Gerken and possibly Williams compete for the No.1 shirt. If the deal goes through that is… Up the U’s!

  • Matt_Us says:

That sounds like a nice idea. But I’m not sure he rates Gerken. Hard to know!

  • StevieG Col U says:

Well, if Lambert bring in Williams and gets rid of Gerken than that is very strange in my eyes! Up the U’s!

  • Matt_Us says:

Would be… although Fox and Williams must have played in the same youth team, so that would work from that point of view. Odd though, you could say the same for White, Gerks and a few ohers could probably, and they are already here!!

Do we really need another keeper? And if we do, that I wonder what’s happend with the whole Jimmy Walker thing?

  • Matt_Us says:

Not sure, from what Vital Crew say about him he seems to rely on confidence, just like Dean. Well, nothing has happened with Walker, And that’s just it!

  • up_the_u's_aaron says:

Wasn’t Walker released for W Ham though? If that is correct, the only thing I see being a proplem is his wages. Or I supose the fact he don;tactually wana come here anyway, lol.

  • Matt_Us says:

If Walker feels he can get a better deal with a club in a higher league, which he might be able to, then my guess is he’d take that. Just that Lambert seemed so sure he wanted him before.
