Scott Vernon will always be regarded with some warmth in North Essex but it will not be enough to win him a new contract during his current spell with the club.

The rangy Vernon is a confirmed free agent at the end of the season following a stop-start campaign where he also spent time at Gillingham and Southend.

Ex-Blackpool forward Vernon had looked to have carved out himself a future with Colchester, scoring freely in pre-season and throughout August as a rejuvenated figure for Paul Lambert.

However he has since fallen down the selection order and told at the end of what will be his second spell with the side that he is surplus to requirements.

He was signed full-time by Geraint Williams eighteen months ago, first impressing in a U`s shirt during the successful League One promotion charge in 2005-6.
