Former U’s defender Matt Heath is reported to be on trial with Oxford United as the 31-year-old central defender looks to secure his immediate future ahead of the new Football League season.

The experienced defender was released by Joe Dunne at the end of last season with his U’s contract having expired and, following 111 appearances for the club, he now seeks pastures new.

Heath first joined up with the U’s in 2008 as he switched to Layer Road from Leeds United in a loan deal as Geraint Williams’ Colchester side slipped to relegation from the Championship after an adventurous two-year stint out of League One.

He made the move permanent in the summer of 2008 before enjoying a five-season stay in north Essex, making appearances for both Brighton and Southend in loan spells away from the club as he fell out of favour at various times.

His last season with the club was dogged by injury and he was restricted to just six League One appearances for Joe Dunne’s side, with the chances of being offered a new deal looking extremely unlikely long before the season’s end.

Heath will be hoping he can impress Oxford manager Chris Wilder sufficiently to earn himself a deal at the Kassam Stadium.
