Colchester slipped to a defeat at Oakwell against Barnsley on Friday night as our return to league 1 action proved an ultimately disappointing one.

An eventful game saw the home side edge us out 3-2 in the end.

Tony Hume was pleased with the performance but obviously disappointed with the defeat with a three-three draw almost snatched at the end but he knows we’ve got to make it harder for teams, when sometimes we make it too easy.

Speaking to the media after the game he said: ‘It’s disappointing as I thought it was a good performance from the lads, but we keep on giving ourselves a mountain to climb. The goal early in the first half gave us something to work at, while the two in the second half makes it really difficult for us.

‘You have got to commend the players, they didn’t get disheartened and I thought we could have nicked a point in the end. We worried them, but at the minute, though, we’re just making it a bit easy for teams.

Sam Winnall (4) gave the hosts an early lead but Sanchez Watt (15) soon had us level, with it one-one at the break.

A second half Conor Hourihane (55) penalty though and Peter Ramage (70) gave us too much too do, Freddie Sears’ (75) goal gave us hope but it wasn’t enough.

Hume knew that if we gave Barnsley chances, with it always going to be a difficult game, they would ‘take advantage and punish us’, as they did.

Things need to be learned from this game but he also felt there were plenty of positives, adding: ‘There are an awful lot positives to take from the game, but obviously there are plenty of things to work on especially to stop the amount of goals we have been conceding recently.’

Now the question is will those things we need to learn from be learned from?
