In an ideal world Colchester would have beaten Swindon on Tuesday to leave our fate in our own hands when we took on Preston on Sunday, as we bid to stay in League 1…. Unfortunately we don’t live in an ideal world do we!

Nevertheless the one-one draw with Swindon, which could have been more, has left Tony Humes telling the media after the game at the WHCS that we’re still in with more than a chance of staying up.

Even though Preston themselves have to win to ensure automatic promotion Humes is backing us to get the win that we need, which might not be enough mind, to stay up and feels that a repeat performance could do just that.

‘It’s not over yet and we should be confident that we can beat Preston, if we play in the same way.

‘I thought that we were outstanding all through the game in terms of how we went about it, the quality we showed and the opportunities that we created.

‘We just didn’t finish them off but the work-rate and effort was excellent.’

He knew that we couldn’t sit back against Swindon, we had to go at them, and as such he backed us to beat them and knows that as much as Swindon also had chances we had more than enough to have won….

‘We made a great start, which we’ve done a lot this season.

‘We kept playing the game the right way and created a lot more opportunities.

‘The chances were there – Swindon had a few chances too but looking at what we created against a good team, the players were fantastic.

‘You have to back yourself when you’re playing against a team like Swindon and if you sit back and wait for them to come and attack you, you’ll end up getting beaten because of the quality they’ve got.’

It’s down to the wire now, as it had been predicted it would, ideally we wanted it in our own hands but it wasn’t to be so all we can do is get the job done against Preston and then hope that it’s enough on Sunday!
