Colchester were well and truly beaten at the Weston Homes Community Stadium as Rochdale ran riot against us.

Not only were we beaten we were thrashed as Rochdale, who hadn’t won away since October, beat us four-one on Saturday to make it five successive league 1 defeats for us and leave us very much in the relegation zone.

Tony Hume wasn’t mixing his words, or holding anything back, when speaking to the media after the game as he openly questioned his players. Not for the first time in recent weeks either! He thinks that a lot of them will have to take a long hard look at themselves following this performance.

It leaves him wondering how keen some were to be playing and what ‘desire’ they had?

He said: ‘It was very poor and there’s going to have to be an awful lot of analysis of players looking at their own performance and how much they wanted to be out there, which is a very sad thing to say.

‘I think you have to question their desire – if you look at the manner of the first three goals where there’s players free because players haven’t stuck to their job and haven’t taken their responsibility to do their job.

‘It’s far too easy so I’m questioning their desire, their attitude to hard work and whether they know their jobs.’

First half goals from Matthew Lund (26) and Peter Vincenti (29) had the visitors in control. Sam Walker was a little unlucky as he got a good hand to Ian Henderson’s (41) penalty but this span back and trickled over the line.

Gavin Massey (50) momentarily gave us hope but the four-one win was sealed by Rochdale through Jack O’Connell (56).

Humes were particularly disappointed that once again until the first goal was scored we ‘were in the game’ but after that ‘character, attitude and individual responsibility’ wasn’t good enough, nor was the fact that we continue to gift goals!
