Colchester United`s midfield stalwart Kemal Izzet is keen to record four victories for the remaining mathes to even stand a chance of overtaking Huddersfield for the final play-off position.
Speaking before the result that saw Millwall defeated by one goal to nil and the Terriers open up a clear gap six-point game between the two teams, long-severing player Izzet was counting on a winning run to give the U`s a fighting chance of promtion, starting on Saturday in League One against Hartlepool.
He told the official site: “We need 12 points, it`s as simple as that. If we are going to give ourselves the best chance possible, we need to win all four. We`re under no illusions as to how hard it`s going to be but they`re definitely winnable.”
Now since Izzet aired his comments, it seems the advantage is no longer with Colchester – they are relying on other results as well as their own to achieve the task of sliding into the top-six sides.
Lamenting the team`s recent bad run of form – one win in the past ten games – which could ultimately have cost Colchester the chance to extend their season into play-off overtime, Izzet spoke of the problem of poor luck, rather than exclusively poor form.
“The disappointing thing is, we`ve played well in every game; it`s just one of those things that we`ve not been able to take our chances when we`ve had them. We`re still there or there abouts. Hopefully, if we win on Saturday depending on other results we will go to Huddersfield and I think we can beat them and take their spot“, he added.
That optimistic assessment from Izzet looks less achievable in light of the most recent result to go against the U`s – even if Colchester do manage victory both this next week.
On the challenge of Hartlepool, who look safe after a relegation scare, Izzet explained: “It can go both ways really; the pressure can be off and they become lose and wild and you go there and they`re expansive and they hit you on every attack possible or they just take their foot off the pedal today and are getting ready for the summer – hopefully it`s the latter.”
